Can you share a pivotal moment or lesson learned from your involvement in CREW?

One of the biggest lessons I've learned through CREW is that you don't have to figure everything out on your own. Through the CREW Leadership Certificate program, I had the opportunity to learn alongside women from across the industry with very different
backgrounds and experiences. Hearing how they approached challenges, career decisions, and leadership opportunities gave me perspectives I wouldn't have gained otherwise.

It reinforced the value of building a strong network, being willing to learn from others, and recognizing that some of the best career growth comes from the conversations you have along the way.

What strategies have helped you build confidence and credibility in the industry?

For me, confidence has come from preparation, experience, and consistently delivering results. Development is a complex industry with a lot of moving pieces and over time I've learned that credibility is built through following through on commitments
and earning trust project by project.

I've also learned the importance of speaking up, even when I don't feel like the most experienced person in the room. Early in my career, I sometimes hesitated to share my perspective. Over time, I realized that I was bringing valuable
knowledge and insight to the table. Confidence grows when you stop waiting for permission and start trusting the expertise you've earned.

Have you had a mentor or sponsor who helped you navigate the industry? How
did they impact your journey?

Absolutely. I've been very fortunate to work with leaders who challenged me, trusted
me, and gave me opportunities. One of the biggest impacts mentors have had on my
career is helping me see potential in myself. Sometimes that meant encouraging me to
take on larger projects, speak up in important conversations, or pursue opportunities
that initially felt intimidating.

Having someone believe in your abilities and advocate for your growth can be incredibly
powerful, and it's something I try to pay forward with the people I mentor today.

What is your "productivity stack" (favourite apps, tools, or habits) that keeps you
organized in such a fast-paced industry?

Outlook is probably my favourite tool I use everyday. I use it for much more than just
email. Folders, categories, flags, reminders, calendar management, it's really my hub
that keeps me organized and helps me keep track of everything in such a fast-paced
industry. I'm also a strong believer in using AI and other emerging tools where they can
help improve efficiency.

More than any tool, though, my biggest productivity habit is focusing on one problem at
a time. I'll work through the emails, decisions, and outstanding issues for that item
before moving on to the next. My priorities shift throughout the day, but that approach
helps me stay focused and keep things moving forward.

What's your guilty pleasure during the workday—coffee breaks, music, a favorite
snack?

Definitely Diet Coke. No matter how busy the day gets, I can usually find time for a
quick Diet Coke break. Some people run on coffee, I run on Diet Coke and project
approvals.

What advice would you give to the next generation of women in CRE who are looking to grow as leaders?

Be intentional about your growth and unapologetic about your ambition. Seek out mentors and sponsors early—especially those who will advocate for you when you’re not in the room—and don’t hesitate to learn from people whose paths look different from yours.
Build technical credibility, but remember that leadership is equally about relationships, judgment, and resilience.

What does success look like for women in CRE, and how can we ensure more
women achieve it?

Success for women in commercial real estate means having
choice, influence, and longevity—access to leadership roles, meaningful deal
experience, fair compensation, and a seat at the decision-making table, with the
flexibility to define success on their own terms. Whether that’s leading a firm,
becoming a trusted expert, or sustaining a balanced career, true success is when
women are no longer exceptions but integral at every level of the industry.

What is one piece of advice you would give to women entering CRE today?

Learn the fundamentals of the business, especially the revenue-driving aspects, and don’t
wait to be “fully ready” before raising your hand for stretch opportunities. Confidence
grows through action, and speaking up for your value—whether on a deal, a role, or
compensation—is a critical leadership skill that will serve you throughout your CRE
career.

If you could describe CREW in three words, what would they be?

Connected. Empowering. Influential.

How does mentoring fit into your personal definition of professional success?

Mentorship has become an important part of how I define my professional success and grow in my career. I genuinely enjoy supporting people who are new to the industry by sharing what I’ve learned along the way; whether they be the wins, the setbacks,
or the mistakes. If my experience can help make someone else’s path clearer, or even a little easier, that is rewarding to me. To me, success goes beyond individual achievement; it’s also about sharing the wealth of knowledge I’ve picked up along
the way and investing back in the people around me.

Looking back at your own career, who was a mentor that shaped you, and how are you paying that forward today?

Looking back, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to not have just one mentor, but four who believed in my skill set long before I fully believed in myself. Jason Schouten, Daniel Lee, Mike Hodge, and Connor Eden, the four founding partners of Tetra Realty
Advisors Inc. consistently pushed me to be comfortable being uncomfortable, encouraging me to grow, evolve, and challenge my insecurities and self-doubt. I knew early on that becoming a broker wasn’t my end goal, and they embraced my decision, reminding
me that there are many other meaningful career paths within CRE. Today, I’m paying that forward by working alongside those same mentors as Executive Director at Tetra, where I have the opportunity to support the business from top to bottom and work
closely with everyone across the organization. I’ve also found real fulfillment volunteering as a mentor with the UCREW Mentorship Program, and I hope to continue giving back in that way.

Has mentoring a member of the next generation changed the way you lead your own teams or manage your own projects?

Yes, mentoring the next generation has definitely influenced how I lead at Tetra. CRE can be a demanding space, and mentoring has made me more mindful about creating environments where people I surround myself with feel supported, heard, and encouraged
to grow. It’s pushed me to communicate more openly, be honest about challenges, and normalize the learning curve and various paths that come with this industry. That perspective has helped me lead with more empathy while still navigating a fast-paced,
    client-centric, results-driven business at Tetra.

What is one skill you think is "underrated" in CRE that you try to instill in your
mentee?

I think one of the most underrated skills in CRE is being genuinely personable. While
technical knowledge matters, relationships are what sustain a long-term career. I try to
show my mentees that approachability, empathy, and clear communication are skills you
can actively develop, not just personality traits you’re born with. Being able to connect
with people, earn trust, and communicate effectively has made a world of difference in
my own career, and it’s something I encourage them to prioritize and effort from the
jump.

How do you approach building trust and a "safe space" for your mentee to share their
setbacks as well as their wins?

For me, creating a “safe space” starts with trust, and trust is built through transparency. I
can’t expect a mentee to openly share their setbacks as well as their wins if I’m not
willing to do the same. I make a point of being honest about my own challenges,
mistakes, and failures, not just the successes. By leading with openness and
consistency, I hope to show them that setbacks are a normal and valuable part of growth.
That mutual transparency helps create an environment where conversations feel genuine
and supportive.

What advice would you give to someone new to the industry looking to grow through CREW?

I would encourage anyone new to CREW to treat it as a community, not a checklist. Show up consistently, get involved in a way that feels natural to you, and follow through on the relationships you start building. In commercial real estate, people tend
to work with one another repeatedly over long periods of time, so your reputation compounds. If you are thoughtful, prepared, and genuinely interested in others, CREW can become not just a networking forum, but a long-term source of mentorship, business
    development and friendship.

What strategies have helped you build confidence and credibility in the industry?

Confidence came from preparation, repetition, and experience. Over time, you realize that credibility is built less by always having an immediate answer and more by exercising sound judgment, being responsive, and following through consistently. In my
experience, people remember whether you were thoughtful, practical and reliable, especially when a deal becomes complicated. That confidence does take time, which is not always easy when you are ambitious and impatient, but there really is no substitute
    for doing the work.

How has the industry changed for women since you started your career?

Since I started my career, there are clearly more women in visible leadership roles, more
intentional mentorship and sponsorship, and more open conversations about advancement
and inclusion. That is meaningful progress. There is still more work to do, particularly at the
most senior levels and in ensuring that different leadership styles are recognized and valued.
What I find especially encouraging is how intentional women in this industry have become
about building networks, creating opportunities for one another and staying connected
across the market.

Vancouver’s market is small and tight-knit. What is your go-to strategy for maintaining long-term professional relationships?

In a small market like Vancouver, long-term relationships come down to trust and
consistency. Some of the strongest connections start early when you are a junior. As you
grow alongside your peers, those relationships deepen as everyone’s careers evolve. Try to
be authentic, professional and helpful, even when there is not an immediate deal on the
table or if things are contentious. In a small market, people remember how you handled the
hard moments just as much as the successful ones.

Are there any podcasts, newsletters, or industry resources you swear by?

I try to keep a balanced mix of market reporting, legal and business updates, and regular
conversations with people who are active in the market. I also use targeted Google Alerts to
track issues affecting risk, deal structure and local development activity. That said, some of
the most useful insight still comes from clients, colleagues and industry peers who are
seeing trends unfold in real time. In this industry, good conversations are often as valuable
as formal resources.

What started as curiosity turned into a career shift, with retail leasing now making up 90% of her work.

For Marei, mentorship wasn’t just about learning the industry, it was about seeing it differently. From strategy and tenant mix to the relationships that shape spaces and communities, she found a side of commercial real estate that is both dynamic and deeply human.

What were you hoping to gain when you first applied for a mentor through CREW Vancouver?

When I first applied for a mentor through CREW Vancouver, I was hoping to expand my network, gain a broader perspective on the industry, and learn from people with more experience in commercial real estate. I really wanted insight from someone who could help me better understand the industry, challenge the way I was thinking, and give me guidance as I figured out where I wanted to grow.

How has your confidence in professional settings changed since having a mentor/joining the program?

Having a mentor and being part of the program has definitely helped me grow my confidence in professional settings. I feel much more comfortable asking questions, speaking with senior leaders, and putting myself out there in conversations I may have once found intimidating. It has also made the industry feel more familiar and welcoming, which naturally makes it easier to build relationships and show up with more confidence.

Has your mentor introduced you to a new side of the industry or a career path you hadn't considered before?

Yes, absolutely. My first CREW mentor introduced me to the world of retail leasing, which now makes up about 90% of what I do - and a part of the industry I genuinely love. Before that, I had not fully seen how dynamic, creative, and engaging that side of commercial real estate could be. She helped me recognize the more exciting and human side of the work: the strategy, the relationships, the tenant mix, and the way retail can help shape spaces and communities. That perspective was truly eye-opening for me and played a major role in drawing me toward the profession I work in today.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to a student or young professional who is nervous about reaching out to a senior leader?

Do it. You’ll thank yourself later! It can feel intimidating at first, but a lot of senior leaders genuinely want to help and share what they’ve learned. Reaching out can lead to conversations that give you valuable insight, new perspectives, and opportunities you may not have even thought about yet. Having guidance from someone more experienced can make such a difference in your growth and help shape your career in a meaningful way.

Do you see yourself becoming a CREW mentor in the future? What would you want to pass on?

Yes, absolutely. I would love to become a CREW mentor in the future. I think it’s such a rewarding experience because it gives you the chance to connect with others, support their growth, and continue learning yourself. I’d want to pass on the value of staying open, asking questions, building relationships, and not being afraid to explore paths you may not have originally seen for yourself. CREW creates such a welcoming environment, and I think that kind of support can make a huge difference for anyone looking to grow in the industry.

What does leadership in CRE look like to you, and how does CREW help foster it?

Leadership in CRE, to me, is about credibility and consistency. Having started my career on the legal side and now working in title insurance side of the industry, I’ve seen how much impact strong leadership has on the outcome of complex transactions.

It’s not always about being the loudest voice in the room, often it’s about being the most prepared, the most collaborative and the most reliable.

Organizations like CREW help foster that kind of leadership by creating meaningful
connections and mentorship opportunities. Having access to a network of accomplished women in CRE not only builds confidence, but also provides visibility into different leadership styles and career paths. It reinforces that leadership can look different
for everyone and that growth is a continuous process.

What strategies have helped you build confidence and credibility in the industry?

Coming from a legal background into title insurance (and transitioning into commercial solutions) I made it a priority to deeply understand the product and the risk we are insuring. When you know your material and can speak to it clearly, credibility
    follows.

I’ve also learned that responsiveness and reliability matter just as much as technical knowledge. In commercial real estate, timing is critical. Being someone clients can depend on builds long-term trust.
Finally, I’ve learned
not to underestimate the value of relationships. Confidence grows when you surround yourself with strong, supportive professionals who elevate one another.

Do you think the barriers to leadership for women in CRE are shifting? What still needs to change?

I do believe the industry is moving in the right direction, but there’s still work to be done.
At FCT, I’m proud to be part of an organization where women hold multiple meaningful leadership roles — including our President, Daniela DeTommaso, who
leads all lines of business across Canada and is a recognized industry leader. That visibility matters, because it shows the next generation that leadership in CRE is both attainable and evolving.

Organizations like CREW are critical in accelerating this shift by highlighting women’s achievements, fostering mentorship and creating space for connection and professional growth. Continued focus on representation, access to high-visibility opportunities
and intentional inclusion will help ensure that progress continues — not just in numbers, but in influence.

What is one industry myth you’d love to debunk?

A common myth, particularly in BC, is that title insurance isn’t necessary because we have a strong land title system.

While BC’s system is reliable and well-established, title insurance isn’t designed to replace it — it complements it. A legal
opinion can only address risks that are identifiable on closing, whereas title insurance protects against much more, including the unexpected. In fact, many claims arise from issues that wouldn’t be flagged in a lawyer’s opinion, such as errors in
government responses, super-priority liens, or the risk of fraud.

In commercial real estate, where transactions are complex and timelines are tight, it’s ultimately about risk management and certainty — strengthening the overall framework
around a transaction and helping ensure deals close smoothly.

If you weren’t in CRE, what other career would you have pursued?

In my early days, I was torn between becoming a hairstylist or a marine biologist, which feels like a fairly classic childhood combination.

Later on, I seriously considered becoming a lawyer. Instead, I found myself working alongside them,
first on the legal side and now in title insurance. It turns out I still get to be part of complex transactions and problem-solving, just from a different seat at the table.

It’s a reminder that our collective progress is built on the relationships, mentorship, and advocacy that have lifted each of us up. This milestone inspires me to continue championing the next generation of women leaders in commercial real estate.

What message would you share with companies considering CREW sponsorship for the first time?
Don’t think of CREW sponsorship as a cost—think of it as a catalyst. It gives your company visibility, access to exceptional talent, and the opportunity to be part of a movement that’s reshaping leadership in commercial real estate. It elevates women in the industry, expands access to professional development, and builds a community where leadership talent continues to excel. If you want to support your team and women within your team, CREW is the place to start.

What inspired you to join CREW Vancouver’s Board of Directors?
When I first learned about the Board of Directors and their accomplishments, I was truly inspired. I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of such a talented, visionary group of women. Every day, I’m energized by their commitment to elevating our industry and creating pathways for more women to grow, lead, and thrive in commercial real estate.

What strategies have helped you build confidence and credibility in the industry?
My confidence has grown through continuous learning and consistently pushing myself outside my comfort zone, while my credibility has been built on delivering results and nurturing strong relationships. When you show people you’re reliable, thoughtful, and committed, trust naturally follows. And I’ve learned that there’s real strength in raising your hand and asking for help when you need it—it’s how we grow.

If you could describe CREW in three words, what would they be?
Supporting, impactful, and visionary.

Leadership Spotlight: Cindy MacMillan

Cindy MacMillan

2025 CREW Network President

Vice President, Asset Management at Grosvenor

How can allies—both men and women—best support CREW’s mission?

First, by educating themselves on bias—both conscious and unconscious. We all have them, and developing that awareness helps leaders see talent and potential more objectively. For decision makers, this skill has an enormous ripple effect across an organization.

Once you’re aware, you start noticing behaviours women often face—being interrupted, talked over, or having their ideas overlooked. Allies can redirect the conversation by saying, “I think [name] wasn’t finished her thought,” or “That idea actually came from [name] a moment ago.” Small acts like these carry big impact. I experienced this personally after sharing a CREW research paper with my COO; in a meeting soon after, when I was interrupted, he stopped the discussion and said, “Let’s let Cindy finish.” That simple gesture stayed with me—it gave me confidence to keep contributing and to claim my voice.

Allies can also mentor women. Access to experienced leaders, networks, and opportunities—being invited into the room or onto a project team—can be career-changing. Many men naturally benefit from these informal networks; allies can help level that playing field by opening doors.

They can also use their influence to promote equity in visible ways—like committing to speak only on panels that are balanced 50/50 between men and women.

And finally, allies can champion CREW directly—by encouraging women to join, get involved, and by supporting through sponsorship. CREW sponsorship dollars fund programs that directly advance women’s careers, both locally and globally. The progress we’ve made over the last two decades is proof of how powerful that support can be.

How has being part of CREW Network influenced your approach to leadership and mentorship?

It’s exposed me to so many incredible women—leaders I truly admire—and seeing their example has been profoundly inspiring. Early in my career, having women to look up to made a world of difference, and now I aspire to be that kind of leader for others. To the extent I can, I’ll always meet someone for a coffee to hear their story and share my own. Those conversations often become moments of connection and encouragement that ripple far beyond that one meeting.

The mentees I’ve worked with have shown me just how powerful it is to have a sounding board—someone to bounce ideas off of, talk through decisions, or simply listen. I feel genuinely grateful any time I can share knowledge or experience that helps someone along their journey.

Taking on leadership positions within CREW has also pushed me to sharpen my skills and stretch beyond what I might encounter in my day-to-day role. It’s given me a platform to practice, flex, and grow as a leader—learning from others while also finding my own voice.

Ultimately, CREW has taught me that leadership and mentorship are reciprocal. You give, you receive, and you grow together—and that’s where the real impact happens.

What advice would you give members looking to maximize the benefits of their CREW Network membership?

Join a committee—either locally through CREW Vancouver or globally through CREW Network. It’s one of the fastest ways to develop new skills, meet incredible people, and build your network. The relationships you form through committee work often lead to business opportunities, friendships, and leadership growth you can’t find anywhere else.

Take advantage of the power of our global community. With 14,000 members across 85 markets, you have access to an extraordinary pool of knowledge and experience. Whenever you have a question or need support, post it on CREWbiz—whether it’s for a market referral, sector best practices, or advice on a challenge you’re facing. You’ll be amazed at how quickly people respond with resources, insight, and encouragement.

And—most importantly—attend events and introduce yourself to people. For years, I showed up just for the content and slipped out right after. I wish I had understood sooner how valuable those hallway conversations are. Networking is a skill—it takes practice—but it’s also your superpower. As your career grows, so does the power of your network.

Finally, explore the education opportunities that CREW offers. From local programming to global thought leadership, there’s so much available. I’m especially excited about the CREW Network Learning Institute, launching in 2026, which will offer programs developed with top institutions like Harvard, MIT, and Yale. It’s designed to support women through every stage of their careers—helping them build both skills and credentials for advancement.

The more you put into your CREW membership, the more it gives back. Every coffee chat, committee meeting, and conversation opens a door—and that’s where the real magic happens.

Do you think the barriers to leadership for women in CRE are shifting? What still needs to change?

Our 2025 Benchmark Study (linked here, the latest in a 20-year series) confirms that some progress is being made: women are reporting gains in access to mentors and sponsors, more flexible work arrangements, stronger executive/C-suite aspirations, and narrowing—but not eliminating—the compensation gap (still 13% in overall compensation).

Yet at the same time, something deeply alarming is happening: for the first time in our benchmarking history, women are citing gender discrimination as the primary barrier to advancement. That suggests that entrenched biases, structural culture, and systemic practices are still exerting a strong drag on women’s progress. What still needs to change—to see true transformation, we need both cultural and structural change — backed by data, accountability, and continuous course correction. As a start:

Accountability and transparency. Leaders must own this issue by reviewing and publicly reporting promotion, pay, and retention outcomes by gender—and by conducting regular external audits, climate surveys, and anonymous feedback loops to uncover and address systemic gaps.

Bias-free and inclusive leadership. Cultural change must start at the top and be sustained through intentional bias awareness, allyship, and inclusive leadership training. Bias mitigation should be built into every decision point—from hiring to promotions—using tools like structured interviews and diverse panels. Addressing the “broken rung” is critical: women are still promoted to first-level management at lower rates than men, and early bias in those decisions compounds leadership gaps later on.

What’s your favorite CREW event or initiative, and why?

In Vancouver, the CREW Gala held every two years which celebrates women’s achievements in our local market with awards for Rising Star, Woman of Influence, Catalyst Award, Tribute Award and Excellence in Service Award, is an outstanding event with a packed room of who’s-who and a jubilant atmosphere honouring those who are breaking barriers and carving paths for women in commercial real estate.

The Annual CREW Network Convention brings together 1,400 CRE professionals for deal making, business networking, and industry education and development, with a roster of world-class keynote speakers. This past week at the 2025 Convention in Austin, TX, we heard from Chely Wright, Hessam Nadji and The Rt. Honourable Dame Jacinda Ardern (former Prime Minister of New Zealand) who I had the pleasure of moderating a fireside chat with. Vancouver was the host city of Convention in 2024 and everyone was still talking about it in Austin a year later – check out the highlight reel from Vancouver here: 2024 CREW Network Convention Highlight Reel on Vimeo

The energy and benefits of Convention can only be fully appreciated by attending this event; I highly recommend it for everyone.

If you had to give a TED Talk tomorrow, what topic would you choose?

The topic I would discuss is: Confidence. What is it and where does it come from?

Early in my career, I often questioned whether I was qualified enough to take on certain challenges, but I’ve learned that growth comes from saying yes, learning quickly, and leaning on your network. Building relationships, both inside and outside your organization is just as important as technical knowledge. And most importantly, don’t underestimate the value of your perspective. The industry needs diverse voices, and bringing your authentic self to the table is a leadership quality in itself.

What strategies have helped you build confidence and credibility in the industry?

I’ve found that credibility comes from consistency, showing up prepared, following through on commitments, and treating every interaction as a chance to build trust. Confidence, on the other hand, has grown from embracing situations that pushed me outside my comfort zone, whether that was presenting my ideas to leaders or negotiations with clients. Each time I pushed past that initial discomfort, it reinforced that I could handle more than I thought, and over time that’s become a real source of confidence.

What is one piece of advice you would give to women entering CRE today?

My advice would be to trust your voice early on. It’s easy to feel like you have to wait until you’ve “earned” your place at the table, but your perspective is valuable from day one. Ask questions, build relationships, and don’t be afraid to take on opportunities that feel a little outside your comfort zone - that’s where the real growth happens.

What’s your favourite CREW event or initiative, and why?

My favourite initiative has to be the CREW Vancouver Leadership Awards. It’s such a special way to celebrate the incredible women and allies in our industry, and I love seeing the spotlight put on people who are making a real impact. Being involved behind the scenes on the Awards Committee has also been rewarding — it’s inspiring to read the nominations and be reminded of the talent, leadership, and generosity that exists in our community.

What book has had the biggest impact on your career, and why?

Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant really shaped how I think about resilience. The idea that setbacks can be a springboard for growth has stuck with me both personally and professionally. In commercial real estate, things don’t always go according to plan, and that book reminded me that adapting, learning, and moving forward with purpose is just as important as the win itself.

After moving back to Vancouver, the opportunity to connect with a supportive and knowledgeable group of women has been invaluable in navigating the market and building a network of connections and resources.

Attending CREW Vancouver events has provided me with the chance to network with a diverse group of professionals and the strong connections I've formed with clients, friends, and mentors through this organization have not only enhanced my professional network but have also provided me with guidance and support in my career.

What strategies have helped you build confidence and credibility in the industry?

I believe that building confidence and credibility are ongoing processes that require continuous effort and self-reflection. In our dynamic industry, where market conditions and trends are constantly evolving, a commitment to lifelong learning is absolutely crucial. For me, one of the most effective strategies for building both confidence and credibility is a dedication to mastering the fundamentals. When I have a solid grasp of the core principles and fundamentals, I naturally feel more confident in my abilities.

Also, the guidance and support of mentors has been of the utmost importance in shaping my career and building my confidence. Having strong relationships with experienced professionals in the industry provides me with access to their expertise and knowledge, not only in my day-to-day business but also in navigating the broader landscape of my career. Their insights, encouragement, and willingness to share their experiences have been instrumental in helping me develop my skills and feel more confident in my decision-making. Finally, I believe that curiosity is a key attribute. A willingness to ask questions, seek out new information, and stay abreast of industry developments is essential for staying relevant and credible.

Who was your biggest champion or supporter early in your career, and how did that impact you?

From my very first day at CBRE in 2017, the entire CBRE platform has served as a tremendous champion and supporter of my career. The collaborative and encouraging environment have been instrumental in my professional growth and has had an immense impact on my journey within the CRE industry. While it's difficult to single out one individual, the collective support from the CBRE family has been consistent and invaluable. Whether I was seeking to pursue a new client account, explore a professional development course, or spearhead initiatives within the CB Women's Network, the CBRE platform has enthusiastically embraced and championed my endeavors.

The impact of this support and encouragement has been profound, especially in the early days of my career. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of the CBRE platform, which has truly made a world of difference then and continues to shape my success every day.

If you could go back and give your younger self career advice, what would it be?

My advice would be, as simple as it sounds, say yes to everything and don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions because you often gain the most from them. Also, don’t forget to relax and enjoy the journey.

What’s one networking tip or career hack you’ve learned through CREW?

One thing that CREW has really solidified for me is how willing people are to help others. People in our industry, including myself, are always willing to connect and support one another. You just have to reach out and ask!

What does this milestone mean to you?

Celebrating 20 years of CREW Vancouver is both humbling and inspiring. As someone who’s been part of this journey from the beginning, it’s incredible to reflect on how far we’ve come—from a small group of passionate women looking to create connections in the commercial real estate industry, to a thriving, influential network that has helped shape careers, foster mentorship, and elevate female leadership across the sector. It's not just a milestone—it's a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and vision. I'm proud to have contributed to building an organization that consistently champions and uplifts women in commercial real estate.

What do you personally hope the golf tournament inspires in attendees?

My hope is that the CREW Vancouver golf tournament encourages attendees to try something new, connect with others in a meaningful way, and see just how powerful informal networking can be. Golf offers a unique setting where titles fade and conversations flow—it’s a chance to learn, laugh, and grow. Whether you're new to the game or a seasoned player, I hope all attendees walk away with valuable connections and memorable moments shared on the course.

How does the golf tournament event align with CREW Vancouver’s mission of advancing women in commercial real estate?

CREW Vancouver’s golf tournament supports our mission by encouraging women to show up, take space, and connect in an environment that has traditionally excluded them. It’s about more than just the game—it’s about building confidence, expanding networks, and creating opportunities for collaboration in a setting where real relationships (and sometimes real deals) are made.

What advice would you give to someone new to the industry looking to grow through CREW?

Get involved early and often. CREW Vancouver is more than just a network—it’s a community of professionals who genuinely want to see each other succeed. Attend events, join a committee, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself. Some of the most valuable relationships and opportunities come from simply showing up and being open. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it—both personally and professionally.

What inspired you to join CREW Vancouver’s Board of Directors?

Joining CREW Vancouver’s Board felt like a natural next step after years of benefiting from the connections, support, and inspiration the organization has given me. I wanted to be more involved in shaping that experience for others—to help create opportunities, foster community, and champion the advancement of women in our industry. Being on the Board allows me to give back and be part of something that’s truly making a difference.

Scholarship Spotlight for 2022 CREW Network Foundation Winner: Ao Lin Shen!

Applications for the current CREW Network Foundation Scholarship are open until April 2.

We asked Ao Lin some questions about her experience as a scholarship winner, these are her insights!

1. Congratulations on receiving the 2022 CREW Network Foundation Scholarship! It’s incredible to see BC represented among recipients worldwide. What did this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?

Receiving the CREW Network Foundation Scholarship was a defining moment in my journey. It was an especially big deal because my case competition teammate and I were the only two Canadians among the 30 recipients, all of whom were from the U.S. Winning this award in my third year of university truly solidified my decision to pursue a career in commercial real estate (CRE).
On a personal level, I’ve always struggled with imposter syndrome, questioning whether I was truly “good enough” for a career this industry. Receiving this recognition gave me a huge confidence boost, validating that my hard work and passion for real estate were being recognized on an international level.

2. How has being part of CREW influenced your journey in commercial real estate?

CREW has provided me with unparalleled access to industry professionals who genuinely want to see the next generation succeed. Through mentorship programs, networking events, and industry panels, I’ve had one-on-one conversations with executives and industry
leaders who shared insights I wouldn’t have gained elsewhere.
Beyond professional guidance, CREW has deepened my understanding of the industry, helping me navigate career decisions—from choosing internships to exploring different real estate
sectors. But more importantly, it has shown me the power of women supporting women in a male-dominated field. Seeing this in action has inspired me to do the same, and I hope to pay it forward by mentoring other young women entering the industry.

3. As a student member of CREW, what has been your most memorable event and why?

Attending the CREW Convention in Chicago was an unforgettable experience. It was my first time at a large-scale industry conference, and seeing over 1,200 professionals—most of them women—was incredibly inspiring. In an industry where women are often
underrepresented, this was unlike anything I had seen before.
I attended insightful panel discussions, networked with top industry leaders, and heard stories from women who had overcome barriers, advocated for themselves, and built successful
careers. The event completely shifted my perspective on resilience, negotiation, and long-term career growth. It gave me the confidence to take on leadership roles in student organizations and push forward in my own career.

4. What advice would you give to students considering applying for the CREW Network Scholarship?

Just go for it. I honestly didn’t think I would get it, but I gave it my best shot anyway—and it paid off. You have nothing to lose except time, and even if you don’t end up receiving the award, the application process itself is a great exercise in self-reflection.
The scholarship isn’t just about grades or technical skills—it’s about passion, leadership, and impact. If you care deeply about CRE, don’t let self-doubt hold you back. Your story matters.

5. For those currently working on their applications, what are your top three tips for success?

1. Start early. The application process is time-consuming, and writing strong essays takes thought and revision. Aim to start at least two weeks before the deadline so you’re not rushing at the last minute.
2. Be personal. Avoid generic responses—tell your unique story and highlight what truly drives you. The more authentic and specific you are, the more memorable your application will be.
3. Get feedback. Ask professors, mentors, or past scholarship recipients to review your essays. A fresh perspective can help refine your message and catch areas for improvement.

I remember a guest lecturer in my Real Estate Development course at UBC. The speaker, a COO of a residential development company, he shared his story of rising from humble beginnings from an immigrant family and his path to building a successful career in development. His story, along with the industry’s entrepreneurial spirit and need for resilience to be successful, resonated with me and solidified my decision to pursue a career in real estate.

2. Beyond professional accomplishments, what personal attributes or values do you believe have been instrumental in your success as a senior director?

A relentless drive for learning and growth has been key to my career progression. I’ve proactively explored different facets of the industry and business beyond my roles, taking inspiration from successful industry leaders while staying true to my values. I’m also grateful for the incredible team at Conwest, whose support has been instrumental in my growth.

3. Can you share a significant sales or marketing campaign you led that had a notable impact on your organization's growth or reputation?

I feel fortunate to have contributed to Conwest’s industry leading stacked-industrial projects: Ironworks and Riverworks. The planning, approvals and development cycle of these projects highlight how innovation stems from collaboration, entrepreneurial thinking, and a commitment to creating a lasting impact on the greater community. Both projects deepen my understanding of marketing and sales strategy and while reinforcing the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. Together, Conwest achieved something meaningful that continues to shape the industry.

Be patient, be persistent and be proactive. Stay focused on your goals, build a strong foundation of knowledge, and embrace continuous learning - growth and opportunities will follow.

5. What does being a part of CREW Vancouver mean to you personally and professionally?

I joined CREW Vancouver as a volunteer 13 years ago and during that time I built meaningful personal and professional connections with some of the industry’s most ambitious, intelligent and inspirational women. Together, we’ve supported and championed each other as we navigate our career paths. CREW has cultivated a unique ecosystem of like-minded professionals, where individuals at all stages life one another, driving both professional and personal growth.

Rumi Yamasawa, CREW Vancouver Co-Director Sponsorship

The Sponsorship Committee is currently looking for and finalizing sponsors for 2025, and the 20th year of CREW Vancouver! We asked Co-Director of Sponsorship, Rumi Yamasawa, some questions to understand what sponsoring CREW means to her and to see what 20 years of CREW means to her. Thank you, Rumi, for sharing!

What advice would you give to a company considering sponsoring CREW Vancouver for the first time?

If their mission or values is to foster and provide an inclusive community for women in all stages of their career, this definitely checks all boxes. Start by volunteering or attending some of the highlighted events . You will quickly understand at first glance why this community has a reputation of building meaningful relationships. I’ve met some of my closest industry friends through this network and they’ve played a significant role through advice, support and collaboration.

What impact do you hope to see CREW Vancouver continue to make in the next 20 years?

I hope to see more awareness of the positive reputation and global impact this chapter has. Vancouver is a small yet mighty community compared to some of the other chapters in NA. I’m extremely proud of the success this chapter has achieved and I hope to continue seeing this in the next 20.

What do you think companies and industry leaders can do to better support women in CRE?

Companies and industry leaders can encourage and motivate their employees to volunteer for CREW or attend events. Not only make it a part of the company culture but a company benefit. It’s such a great opportunity to help build confidence, leadership skills and support. Lucky for me, I have a company that does. A little shout out to Dayhu 😊

If you weren’t in CRE, what other career would you have pursued?

When I was younger I was always fascinated with the behind the scenes of production and Ops in film/TV. 3-2-1 and ACTION!!!

By serving on this board, I will advocate for meaningful change, and help build a more equitable and dynamic future for women in commercial real estate.

How has being part of CREW influenced your approach to leadership and mentorship?

It’s on our hearts to drive a diversity-based business model and highlight women’s achievements and expertise in the industry. Not only are CREW Vancouver members well recognized for leadership in CRE, but we’re continuously fostering women in commercial real estate through a combination of mentorship, DEI, and networking opportunities that drive cultural shifts. This is no easy task, yet we are continuously influencing impact today and for years to come.

working as a consultant for commercial real estate investors on master plans
and development projects across China, Malaysia, Korea, Cambodia, Nepal,
Singapore, Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania, Mozambique, and more. In 2019, I
moved to Vancouver and joined an international consulting firm, where I
conducted feasibility studies and developed portfolio strategies for local

investors. This curiosity led me to join Trez Capital in 2021, where I embarked
on a journey in Credit Risk and Underwriting. As a leading commercial mortgage

I balance long-term goals with short-term tasks by viewing my

From there, I transitioned into development sales and marketing, initially focusing on industrial markets before shifting my focus to multi-family residential project launches.

In early 2022, I took a significant leap by leaving a project management role at a large real estate marketing agency to launch my own company, Scribe Copywriting, which specializes in brand strategy and copywriting for new developments. With Scribe, my goal was to combine my industry expertise with my passion for storytelling and branding.

Can you share a pivotal moment or experience in your career that significantly influenced your professional trajectory?

Branching off to launch Scribe was the most pivotal moment in my career. Until then, I had worked for larger organizations as part of a team, so launching my own business marked a significant shift in direction. It was intimidating, but I felt there was an opportunity for new creative voices to make a mark in the industry.

As a member of CREW Vancouver, what aspects of the organization resonate most with you, and how has it impacted your professional development?

I have been fascinated with women’s stories for as long as I can remember, and I am a huge believer in encouraging women to advocate for themselves to accomplish great things. CREW’s mission aligns perfectly with this passion, making the organization a natural fit for me.

CREW has an incredible member base, and the connections, mentorship, and support that I received through the organization have been instrumental in my career. Many of the women in this organization acted as a sounding as I was launching Scribe, which was incredibly helpful.

What advice would you give to other aspiring women in real estate who are looking to establish themselves professionally and make meaningful connections within the industry?

Network as much as possible and connect with others in the industry, especially peers who share your aspirations to grow. Treat people with respect and value their time and energy. And don’t forget to take care of your mental and physical well-being.

Beyond your professional endeavors, what activities or passions outside the office keep you energized and fulfilled, and how do they complement your career in real estate?

In the last two years, I've become increasingly fascinated by the intersection of art and entrepreneurship. I am a big believer in the power of community and local business, which inspired me to launch the SPACES blog last year, where I highlight local entrepreneurs and their stories. It has been incredibly fulfilling to connect with my community and support the creative endeavors happening around me.

After a small stint as a residential real estate salesperson, I quickly discovered that wasn’t quite the correct path and that’s when I was exposed to the administrative side of things where I was able to apply my organizational and attention to detail strengths to support other sales professionals.

When I moved to Canada, I transitioned into commercial real estate, further expanding my experience and skills working for a top Fortune 500 company and currently, a local highly awarded developer. Each day adds value to my learning curve, and working with such forward-thinking professionals keeps me inspired to grow and contribute.

Can you share how you prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities to ensure smooth operations when providing professional support?

I prioritize tasks based on the level of importance and urgency from senior management and the business, which helps me set the overall direction. Then, I work off a detailed schedule to manage meetings, plan events, make reservations, and ensure everything runs smoothly.

As an active member of CREW Vancouver, how do you see your involvement contributing to the empowerment of women in the real estate industry?

My role as Co-Chair of the Events Committee is incredibly rewarding. I help organize events that engage, inspire, and support women in real estate. One of my favourite events is the annual golf tournament. A lot of time and work goes into planning and executing this event, but it is incredibly rewarding on the day to see people come together, enjoy themselves, and network in a fun and relaxed setting.

From my own experience, I can't emphasize how important it is to seek out mentors who truly believe in your potential. Having someone in your corner can make all the difference as you navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Alongside mentorship, I encourage everyone to prioritize continuous learning and development.

If you encounter high-pressure situations or tight deadlines in your day-to-day responsibilities, what is your secret to handling them?

When faced with high-pressure situations or tight deadlines, I find it essential to take a deep breath and step away momentarily to gather my thoughts. This brief pause allows me to refocus and approach the situation with clarity. One of my go-to strategies at the end of each day is to create a to-do list for the next day, ensuring I’m prepared and organized. This proactive approach helps minimize the impact of unexpected disruptions on my schedule. By staying ahead and maintaining a structured plan, I can navigate through deadlines effectively and maintain productivity.

How do you maintain a work-life balance, and what activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?

I am a huge advocate for switching off notifications on my phone outside of work hours. It’s a simple but effective way of creating boundaries and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. When I’m not working, I find solace and rejuvenation at the beach—it’s my calming and happy place. I consider myself a 'water baby' and would much prefer skiing behind a boat than on snow!

I drew inspiration from my father, who was also in the construction industry, which sparked my interest in real estate. Early in my career, I realized that problem-solving and collaborating with various stakeholders were aspects of the job that I found incredibly rewarding. Over time, I honed my people skills, which I discovered to be paramount in maintaining my motivation and driving my career forward. I have also found the panel discussions and speaker sessions organized by CREW to be incredibly impactful. These events provide invaluable perspectives from industry leaders and peers, which have broadened my understanding and approach to various challenges in the real estate and construction sectors.

What’s your favorite productivity hack or office ritual that helps you get through the day?

My favorite productivity hack is maintaining a handwritten agenda. Each day, I copy all the meetings from my Outlook calendar into my agenda, using blue or black ink to write down pending tasks, then ticking them off in red once they are completed or scratching them off in blue or black if they are no longer relevant. This ritual not only helps me stay organized but also gives me a sense of accomplishment as I see my progress throughout the day. I have also found integrating my personal life into the agenda to be helpful in ensuring a balanced approach to managing both work and personal commitments. This system keeps me focused and motivated, helping me navigate through my day efficiently.

What has been the most rewarding project or achievement in your career, and why does it stand out to you?

Selecting the most rewarding project is challenging because each one has brought its own unique set of problem-solving and results. However, what stands out to me the most is witnessing the growth and development of my colleagues. As I have advanced in my career, I have seen others step into roles I previously held, and it has been incredibly fulfilling to watch them grow and succeed. Real estate is truly a peoples’ industry, and seeing the people I have worked with evolve and thrive in their positions highlights the collaborative and supportive environment we foster. This shared growth and the relationships built along the way make my career especially rewarding. It's not just about individual achievements, but about growing together as a community and contributing to each other’s success.

What advice would you give to other aspiring women in real estate who are looking to establish themselves professionally and make meaningful connections within the industry?

My advice to aspiring women in real estate is to actively join industry organizations, such as CREW, right at the beginning of your career. However, don’t just join – if you can, participate on a board. Serving on a board provides invaluable experience in running meetings, understanding financial statements, and practicing public speaking. These skills are crucial for professional development.

Additionally, being actively involved allows people to get to know you and recognize your capabilities, which can lead to meaningful connections and opportunities. It is also a fantastic learning environment where you can ask questions and engage in discussions in a supportive setting. These experiences not only enhance your skill set but also build your confidence and reputation within the industry. Networking and continuous learning are key to establishing yourself and achieving long-term success.

I graduated from Western University with a degree in Geography and relocated to Vancouver from Southern Ontario to pursue new opportunities. While I had some background in development through a few courses, it was my organizational skills that led me to a receptionist position at a development firm. This role introduced me to the dynamism of the real estate industry—every day presented a new challenge, requiring quick problem-solving, collaborative efforts, and innovative solutions. It quickly became clear that this was the right path for me.

Over the next four years, I transitioned from an admin position into a Development Manager role at another company. There, I gained extensive knowledge of the full project lifecycle, honed my skills in stakeholder engagement, and learned how to communicate strategic directions effectively to consultants. This experience was invaluable.

Recently, I joined Conwest as a Policy and Communications Manager. This role marries my passion for reading and research with my professional life, allowing me to engage with new information daily, which helps inform our corporate strategies and decision-making processes. This ever-changing landscape not only challenges me but also fuels my passion to strive for excellence in my field, as someone who always loves to learn.

Could you share a significant challenge you encountered in your career and how you successfully navigated through it?

In the development industry, which is predominantly male, my quick promotion to a Development Manager as a young woman often led to being underestimated. In many meetings with consultants and contractors, I found my contributions being overlooked or outright ignored. This constant questioning of my authority, despite representing my team’s directions, was not only frustrating but also exhausting. To address this, I sought guidance through CREW’s mentorship program and collaborated closely with my mentor, Mackenzie Biggar. We role-played various scenarios, which helped me craft effective responses and assert my presence in meetings. This mentorship was pivotal; it bolstered my confidence to challenge why I was being sidelined and to have the confidence to continue my role. This experience taught me that the issue wasn’t with my capabilities but rather with how traditional dynamics undervalued my contributions as a woman in the industry and in that position.

How do you see your role within CREW Vancouver helping to advance and support the careers of other women in real estate?

I'm one of the Co-Chairs of the Marketing and Communications team here at CREW Vancouver. I oversee the social media and web aspects of our team. As co-chair of the social media team, my role is crucial in amplifying our message and supporting women’s careers in real estate. We use social media to communicate the value of our events, highlight learning opportunities, and underscore the importance of networking. It was through CREW’s network that I discovered Conwest and learned about their team and values, which directly influenced my career path. By continuing to spotlight successful women and inclusive companies within our network, I aim to foster a supportive community that encourages career advancement for women in real estate.

What advice would you offer to someone embarking on a career in your field, aspiring to achieve the success you have attained?

To those starting in real estate development, I recommend being proactive: ask questions, seek opportunities, and demonstrate initiative. Volunteering for additional responsibilities and consulting with senior colleagues about essential skills and knowledge has been integral to my career progression. Showing your willingness to engage and take responsibility and this will set you apart and open doors to more significant opportunities and responsibilities in your role.

Also, joining professional groups like CREW and participating in mentorship programs can be incredibly beneficial. Applying for the CREW Mentorship program was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my career thus far!

Find a company that will support your continuous growth, and values you.

Can you share a favorite book, movie, or travel destination that has had a significant impact on you?

I'm always reading, so I would like to share 2 books!

"Think Again" by Adam Grant. I've read a lot of books on Critical Thinking, but so far, this one has been my favourite. As I was reading, I was challenging my own assumptions and "facts" that I've always thought and known, and after reading I've become a lot more critical of my own thought process and beliefs. This book is a must-read for anyone looking to question and improve their thought processes.

"Right Kind of Wrong" by Amy Edmonson. As someone who has always worked extremely hard to not make mistakes, this book was a game changer for me. Edmonson's insights into the constructive role mistakes can play in our development were eye-opening. The book discusses building environments where making the "right" kind of mistakes is not only accepted but encouraged, as it is crucial for learning and innovation. It has helped me embrace challenges with a new perspective, understanding that errors are not setbacks but stepping stones to greater understanding and success. This book was a great recommendation from my COO for me to read as someone still relatively early in their career, so I'd recommend this to anyone in the same place.

Was there a specific moment or experience that sparked your interest?

“I have always had an interest in design and placemaking. My background is in architecture, which initially shaped my professional path. When I decided to make a career pivot and was introduced to an opportunity in real estate development through a friend, I saw it as a new, engaging way to shape communities and contribute to their growth.”

How do you stay motivated during challenging or mundane tasks?

“During challenging or mundane tasks, I stay motivated by finding something within the task that genuinely interests me. Rather than focusing on my strengths, I find it helpful to identify what sparks my curiosity and excitement. By connecting the task to my broader values, interests, and goals, I can maintain a sense of purpose, which helps me push through and stay productive.”

How do you continue learning and growing both personally and professionally as you progress in your career?

“I continue to learn and grow by actively engaging with industry networks like CREW. Beyond just attending events, I try to connect with my peers on a deeper level, gaining new insights from their experiences. Volunteering with the 2024 CREW Network Convention Marketing Committee has been particularly impactful, as it has allowed me to contribute in new, unique ways outside my traditional role. I also appreciate the supportive and collaborative environment that CREW fosters regardless of your role or skill set.”

What advice would you give to someone who eventually wants to be where you are?

Given my own path to development, I would encourage maintaining an openness to a variety of projects, tasks, opportunities and experiences—even those that don’t directly relate to development. Thinking outside the box can provide you with a stronger portfolio of industry and soft skills, whether you are following a more traditional path or are making a career pivot.

I also highly encourage finding mentors who truly believe in you and will advocate for your growth. Whether they are external connections or within your organization, having someone who can provide honest feedback and advice will be vital to your growth and success, no matter what stage of your career you are in.

What was the last good book you read/podcast you listened to/movie you saw?

“A podcast I’ve been enjoying recently is “Ologies” hosted by Alie Ward. Each episode dives into different topics such as neurobiology, ecology, and even more niche subjects – hence the series title. I love being introduced to topics I wouldn’t typically encounter in my daily work. It’s a fantastic way for me to unwind and stay curious about the world around me. The host is also very well-spoken, which makes even the most complex subjects accessible and engaging.”

What are your key initiatives as Marketing and Communications Co-Chair?

I had only been in the real estate industry for a couple of years when I was first introduced to CREW. While I wasn’t completely sure what a volunteer role would involve, I was instantly drawn to the network when I began meeting the different women behind the scenes. I soon experienced how CREW enables you to expand your network through meeting other volunteers and members, attending events and workshops, and participating in mentorship programs. Now, five years later, I am still in awe of the dedication and coordination that goes into bringing our ideas to life, while working alongside a group of supportive and inspiring women.

As the MarComm Co-Chair, our main initiative is communicating the value that an individual or sponsor can gain from this network. Between eblasts, graphics & branding, and social media, our committee ensures that the CREW mission is spread throughout the industry to attract more volunteers and members, and ultimately, advance and support women in this community.

You have had a very successful career at Strand with continuous growth within the company, what originally drew you to this sector and what elements of your job excite you the most?

After graduating from university, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in marketing, although I wasn't entirely sure which industry to focus on. It wasn't until I started looking into the Vancouver real estate scene that I realized how seamlessly I could blend my marketing interests with this dynamic field. What excites me most is the diversity of each day and the opportunity to be involved in projects from their inception to completion. It’s exciting to see things that you helped create come to life, whether it be a project brand, brochure, signage, display suite etc.! Not to mention, I get to collaborate with so many different teams including development, interior design, and finance. Being part of the Strand team has been incredibly rewarding as it has exposed me to a wide array of developments including rental, condo, office, and industrial projects. I am constantly learning and growing and feel fortunate to be surrounded by like-minded, motivated people.

What advice do you have for young professionals and students interested in a career in commercial real estate?

My advice would be to start networking early (leveraging LinkedIn, going for coffee, attending events etc.). When I was a student, I remember finding this quite daunting as I didn’t think anybody would have time for someone just starting their career! However, I quickly learned that most people are willing to share their experiences and offer genuine advice. Vancouver's real estate network is relatively small, so building relationships can open numerous doors. Additionally, getting involved with networks like CREW can provide access to valuable events and scholarships tailored specially for students.

What is a work or personal accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Last year, I was presented with the Excellence In Service Award at the CREW Leadership Awards. Being recognized by CREW holds immense significance for me, as this network has played a pivotal role in shaping my career and skillset over the years. Through CREW, I've had the privilege of connecting with remarkable women and accessing invaluable tools that have been instrumental in my growth, both personally and professionally.

Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies/passions?

Outside of work, I'm a huge foodie, so I'm always trying out new restaurants around the city. I also love travelling – even if it's just a quick weekend trip nearby for a change of scenery!

Madeline Clement, Director, Asset Management at Manulife Investment Management + CREW Vancouver Director of Education & Outreach (EO)

Madeline Clement is the Director of Asset Management for Manulife Investment Management. In her role, Madeline oversees +3 Million sf of commercial real estate assets in British Columbia for Manulife’s general account and third-party funds. She is responsible for maximizing value by developing and executing asset-level strategies and overseeing leasing, property management and development activities. She is also the Director of Education & Outreach CREW Vancouver. In this role, she leads the organization's educational programming initiatives and helps to promote diversity and inclusion in the commercial real estate industry.

Q: Madeline, thank you for being our Member & BOD Spotlight! Can you tell us how you first became involved with CREW Vancouver and what drove you to join the Education & Outreach Committee and the Board?

Thanks for reaching out!

I moved to Vancouver from Toronto almost 10 years ago and knew one person in this city. At the time, she was a volunteer with CREW and encouraged me to get involved with the organization. Following her advice, I attended numerous CREW events and met amazing people, many who are lifelong friends. Fast forward to 2022 – I formally joined the Education and Outreach Committee and now serve on the Board of Directors.

I believe education is a passport to a brighter future and an impactful way to create diversity in our industry. I’ve always been passionate about education and mentorship, so joining the Education & Outreach Committee was an obvious fit for me. I am incredibly inspired by our team’s dedication and the impact they are making on our industries future leaders.

I was driven to join the Board as I saw it as an opportunity to integrate the Education & Outreach Committee’s mission into the strategic vision of the broader organization. Collaborating with people who are dedicated to strengthening diversity in the industry has been rewarding. Throughout my career I’ve been fortunate to have a strong support system, and now, my involvement with CREW is another opportunity to pay it forward.

Q: As CREW Vancouvers Directors of Education & Outreach, what are your key initiatives and responsibilities?

As Director of Education & Outreach, I oversee the strategic direction of CREW's educational initiatives which promote diversity and inclusion in the commercial real estate industry. Our key initiatives include our:

Professional Mentorship Program: This annual initiative matches CRE professionals with experienced senior leaders. Each year we have an amazing roster of mentors and very engaged mentees which makes this is a staple program of CREW.

UCREW: Through our UCREW program, we organize networking events and educational workshops for students. We also create educational campaigns on social media and support as educational sponsors for various student-led initiatives, including the SFU Beedie Urban Development Program.

Student Mentorship Program: Each year, we facilitate a program that connects post-secondary students with associate-level CRE professionals. We just rolled this out in 2022 and have exciting goals to continue to grow the program.

Scholarships: As part of our commitment, CREW Vancouver is a partner on three scholarships that are designed to foster a pipeline of talented future female professionals in the commercial real estate industry:

CREW Network Foundation Scholarship

CREW Vancouver & Conwest Award for Women in Real Estate (UBC)

CREW Vancouver & Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University Advancing Women Real Estate Award

Q: What advise do you have for young professionals and students interested in a career in commercial real estate?

Success in your professional journey is a continuous process – some of your most valuable lessons will be taught not only by your accomplishments, but also the hard lessons you learn from challenges. Stay persistent, stay positive and believe in your abilities. Also:

Work Hard: Cultivate a strong work ethic and demonstrate reliability, dedication, and a willingness to go the extra mile.

Build a Strong Network: Relationships are the heartbeat of our industry. Look for mentors who can guide you in your career journey. Get to know your coworkers, peers, clients and competitors – their insights will be invaluable.

Embrace Challenges: View challenges as opportunities to grow and develop new skills – stepping outside your comfort zone often leads to significant opportunities and personal growth. Invest in your personal and professional development.

Be Authentic and Respectful: Lead with respect, honesty and integrity. Determine your values and align with people who share those.

Remain Curious: Ask questions and never stop learning. Stay up to date on the market trends, economic indicators and emerging opportunities in our industry.

Q: Finally, what is the most rewarding part about being a part of CREW Vancouver's Education and Outreach Committee?

There are many rewarding parts of being a part of this team but just to name a few – seeing students get jobs through connections made at our networking events. Hearing about a mentor and mentee in our program forming a bond that translates into valuable business opportunities. Seeing scholarship recipients feel empowered to continue their pursuit to find a career in commercial real estate. And being a part of a team that is so passionate and committed to growing a diverse pipeline of future leaders for our industry.
